This past April, the World Health Organization’s Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (the “IAGC”) released a report to the Secretary-General of the United Nations detailing the dangers of antimicrobial resistance and its implications for global public health.
The IAGC posited that antimicrobial resistance is a global crisis that risks reversing a century of progress in health. Drug-resistant diseases already cause at least 700,000 deaths globally per year, which could increase to 10 million deaths globally under the worst case circumstances according to the Report.
The IAGC made a series of recommendations for combatting drug-resistant infections, which included, “calls on public, private, and philanthropic donors to increase investment and innovation in quality-assured, new antimicrobials (particularly antibiotics), novel compounds, diagnostics, vaccines, waste management tools, and safe and effective to antimicrobials”. At Seraph Biosciences, we believe that Seraspec® is uniquely positioned to help combat antimicrobial resistance by rendering a real-time diagnostic result at the point-of-care.
